Working Techniques and Styles

In an effort to ensure the highest quality and lasting permanence I make my own paints and mediums using raw pigments and materials. I also stretch and prepare my own canvases. I use a variety of media during the completion of preliminary studies but prefer to do the finished paintings in oils or acrylics. I use what is a mostly abandoned oil glazing technique where layer upon layer of paint is painstakingly built up to achieve the highest richness and depth of colour possible. It is a technique demanding the greatest of patience but which results in a degree of control unobtainable through other painting methods.

Using the highest quality canvas I begin the oil painting process with the application of two coats of glue sizing and two coats of lead priming. An under-painting is followed by an over painting and as many transparent glazes as I deem necessary.
